Talwar Surname Research

Late Roshan Lall Talwar Family
My Grandfather name was Late Ishwar Dass Talwar, my father name was Late Roshan Lal Talwar. My father including himself were three brothers and one sister. After partition, our families moved from Lahore - Montgomery, Gujranwala of erstwhile India to different parts of India. Mostly our relations, got settled in present India at Delhi, New Delhi, Agra, Jhansi, Jabalpur, Indore, Bombay, Chandigarh to mention few cities/towns.

Today as I am writing my father / mother, his brothers / wife's, father only sister & her husband are all gone. Right from my tender age, to now am 62 YRS, I had always had a desire to meet, or chat with any family having Talwar as there surname. Over the years, my desire to know our roots, what we call family tree was there that I finally embarked on the journey to know my roots.

At this stage it is in its infancy, but would like to exchange ideas, with all  families who  carry our  same surname to build ancestor family tree.

I also know, lot will say they are busy, or just not interested, there is nothing to loose, if we know  our Talwar Dynasty / its origin etc.

Today, our surname fills up pages after Patel's in Indian Telephone directories and many are  settled around the globe.

I would like thank every one, who writes / contributes / helps us to see we achieve in making our own genealogy. Later would like to add, all Khatri names as time progresses.

Lot of people, will say they have records at Haridwar, (holy place in India, where we all go, to immerse ashes of our near and dear ones to river Ganga) where our ancestors names are recorded with Pandas. But do not know how these pandas of today take you for a ride. My own experience has not been very encouraging. Especially when births / deaths registers in modern society, is still a long dream in our mother land.

Pandas / priests, need to use, computer age to get information recorded/updated/matched etc, to get easy approach to one family. Yes some times people say, its good to see your forefathers handwriting / signatures, bring us to spiritual / emotional feelings etc. I do not disagree, but even that can be done, along with tonnes of records dating back to many centuries.

Science has modernized every field, but still we need to go long way to connect our forefathers, when it goes to our mother land. Hope fully with electronic world of today, it may easier to reach all Talwars's now settled all around the globe.

I will appreciate, all those from Male side, young or old or Female side young or old and are connected to Talwar family, please do write me, to include in the genealogy of TALWAR'S.

This will help me, not to say it will also help you to know your own near and dear ancestors.

Please leave your email ID, contact details, and comments & details about your family etc, if you will be keen to know more. I started with very few names, and have already reached 300 individual names, and most of them directly related. Others, around another 500 names are pending for want of more details, I urge all who have sent me details, please do update your details as requested, in my replies. No wonder, you may be my next cousin!

God bless,
Arun Talwar

Dear Brothers and Sisters belonging to Talwar family

Hello, from your dear brother whose roots, started from my parents when they migrated from present Pakistan during partition in 1947. It’s been too much pain for many, in my case parents did not reminded the scars or talked about it, possibly to see life goes on.

Here I am taking to that journey to connect us with “Lost Talwar Families” who packed off from present Pakistan to current India but lost connections with there near and dear ones, due to any reason what so ever, as some were born before Independence and some born after.

I was born after Independence at New Delhi in June, 1948.

I am doing research with our common surname TALWAR, and I am in the process of making TALWAR DYNASTY.

What I am aiming as to have proper Talwar’s Ancestry. I need your help, you may be  settled in India / over seas  or your off springs  are settled around the world say USA, Canada, UK, Germany, India or Sweden  and list may go on and on.
I while going through white pages I find TALWAR surname as most common / fascinating clan, whose history is linked and talked about as warriors, right to the days of Raja Ranjit Singh.

I started this research last month, .i.e. August’ 2010, and came across that TALWAR SURNAME is suffixed with English Names also. Possibly either some got married to English personalities due to possibly upheaval around those olden times, and there children / grand children adopted English first name, but carried with our surname.

More, recently I had chat with Talwar family in Sweden, and have written lot of letters around the globe, some have come with very fascinated replies. If you all would contribute one day we will have a Talwar Family Tree, but this task needs help from brothers and sisters who carried our surname.

I also know, lots of us are busy, but I would give my HUMBLE REQUEST to still find some time if I could connect you to Lost Talwar Family. You loose nothing but a full report once completed will be a joy worth reading in your own private home, and know more deep about your family.

Possibly as, Talwar title do come under Khatri clan, which dates back to 250 to 350YRS, but exact origin is not known. Talwar by meaning goes as swordsman, but in Hindi, Punjabi or Urdu, its pronunciation goes as Talwar (Tal  WARH) etc, as Vansh. Our clan, it’s believed were great warriors during Raja Ranjit Singh era.
Also I am trying to do research on origin, of Khatri / Kshatriya / Gotras clan to get into the picture of how many years behind we could link our forefathers. My family links, goes back to 8 to 9 generations, and there names are, one story says our forefather worked as a Commander in Chief in Raja Ranjit Singh Army. But not yet proved with any literature / citations etc.

This story (regarding our forefathers worked with Raja Ranjit Singh army) came out to be same from another Talwar family who is settled in USA, married to German Family. Namely Mrs. Veena Talwar Oldenburg and she have sent me a very long lovely letter of her family. I am looking forward for there Family Tree to place in our genealogy in chronological / time line etc.

OUR FORE FATHERS,

(Wife’s NAMES ARE NOT KNOWN)

Hukumat Rai / Diwan Singh ji / Hari Singh / Ram Singh / Jwala Sahay / Ganpat Rai

/ Nehal Chand Talwar /

FORE FATHERS OTHER CHILDREN

ARE

“LOST TALWAR FAMILY”

MY GRAND FATHER

Late Lala Ishwar Dass Talwar

HIS THREE SONS

Late R P Talwar, Late K L Talwar, Late R L Talwar

My father name was Roshan Lal Talwar (b.1915 – d. 2006), was a freedom fighter, worked as Captain for Subash Chander Bose Army, in attaining India struggle for freedom from colonial rule. He was very proud of that, and always used to speak of war days stories, and what it meant to him. I did come across other day details about Subash Chander Bose, wherein some places and events mentioned were recalling my memories.

My father war days memories still haunt my mind, and I do look forward for placing it in his diary, with words as narrated to me. I also know that Indian Government, did do a interview for him for a TV, and hopefully one day, I will try to see, if I could get a video copy, where in he has recorded his memories as a freedom fighter. I possibly will look forward to obtain a copy from Doordarshan TV Channel, N Delhi, India.

I won’t know in time line chart, i.e. from Hakumat Rai to Nehal Chand Talwar how many brothers /sisters they were. Also my grandfathers were 3 / 4 brothers, but do not have where there families are settled now and did had a sister also.

I come from a family of two brothers and one sister all are married, my father and his brothers all have left for heavenly abode. My mother left us last year in Nov 2009. Me and my siblings were born brought up in New Delhi and are happily married. My father siblings i.e. brothers and one sister are all gone.

Basically there next generation is now on going who may not even know the aftermath of partition which took place in 1947, when Pakistan was created and all families had to flee there homes to present India, resulting in “LOST TALWAR FAMILY ” / clan etc.

We are now settled here in New Zealand. So thought its high time we have Talwar Family Tree, as its very common with English societies around the western world, where in they can claim who there forefathers were where they came from and what they all did for there lively hood etc.

I believe some of the “Lost Talwar Family” may belong to one of our forefathers etc., may his brothers, and then there families.

I am trying to see, how far we can have links, it may be we could go back to Mahabharata Times or up to Moguls Times / Rajputs era etc.

I will appreciate your help, and possibly you could forwards my emails to any Talwar family related or other wise as your friends etc, will be highly appreciated, with a copy for me to make a follow up.

I am looking for help, with your family profile, like:
  1. Your parents name, DOB, Place of Birth, if they are still alive or other wise.
  2. You’re Grand, Great Grand Parents etc, with same details, if any you may have.
  3. Your siblings, brothers, sisters, cousins etc.
  4. Your children names, both male and female, year of birth etc, your grand children names.
  5. Possibly if U may have contact details, or email ID to start with is fine.
  6. Do you follow any Gotra, if so please let us know? Also if you may have Pandas name in Haridwar etc, wherein you or your family recorded family details, when last rites were performed, while immersing ashes of our loved ones, to Holy Ganga River?
One thing I have noticed that Talwar family do not send their daughter or son to another Talwar family, which some how makes me believe that we are all off springs of same forefather/there brothers etc?

Later I will send my family tree link which is in infancy, and as  am updating this site, our family has grown with 300 names, directly related and approximately more than 500 names whose details are required is awaiting uploading to family genealogy web site,. Lets all join in this crusade to help, I expect my  family site to surpass more than 2000 direct / indirectly related in the months & years ahead.

Any suggestions, family anecdotes which you may have, or your parents / grand parents might have told you, most welcome. I have attached acrobat file to help you to send us back your names of family members, to later enter in the Talwar Genealogy. A joint family photo with children will be great as system can identify while tagging family generations behind.

There is saying, with the tremendous job ahead:  “CAN WE DO IT” ANSWER IS, YES WE CAN. So lets be all part of it.

I would appreciate if contact details / email ID are given for me for me to acknowledge, trust me I will. Once you have shared your information, I am happy to provide my latest report with close to 300 names which are connected to my family.
